MILFORD/NORTHFORK NAME: Milford/North Fork | |
Founded around 1874-75. Mill erected by Ase Wilson in 1878. Orig. known as North Fork, later as Milford. Nearly selected as county seat for Fremont County in 1884, but beaten by Lander. Ase Wilson said to be a cousin of General William Tecumseh Sherman and is buried at Willcox-Masonic cemetery. Town once had first brick school in county, several stores, redlight house and a couple saloons (first place off the Wind River Reservation soldiers from Fort Washakie could get liquor). COMMENTS: Possibly up to 20 current residents; 5 miles north of Lander, WY on Highway 287 N.; 2 cemeteries: Alton-Leseberg cemetery at crossroads at Milford and the Willcox-Masonic Cemetery 1 mile northeast on 2nd St. road --Lena Canary Borner (sister of Calamity Jane) is buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery.
